Matariki
It had been a couple of years since our Matariki stock designs were last updated. While the original designs performed well in sales, we noticed a growing trend of customers requesting custom Matariki designs. By introducing fresh stock options, we aimed not only to boost sales but also to offer inspiration and a creative starting point for those considering custom flag designs.

Flagmakers showroom flags
The flags outside our showroom featured outdated branding that no longer reflected our business. I wanted to create new designs that wouldn’t blend into the building but instead added visual interest and improved street appeal.
Rather than using generic terms like “Open,” which is already implied by having flags displayed, I developed a series of short, impactful phrases that speak to what flags are actually designed to do: “Get noticed,” “Be seen,” and “Stand out.” These slogans are bold, simple, and easy to absorb quickly, especially for passing traffic.
To enhance visibility, I used a range of vibrant background colours to draw the eye and create contrast. I also experimented with AI tools to generate imagery of people doing things you wouldn’t typically expect to see on flags, designed to spark curiosity and capture attention.

Christmas Flags
Following the same approach as with our Matariki flags, we saw strong sales from our Christmas stock designs but also noticed a growing trend of customers requesting custom designs. Drawing inspiration from many of those custom requests that came across my desk, I created a new set of Christmas present-themed stock street flags.
The concept was inspired by the shape of the flag itself. By wrapping it with a bow, it visually resembled a Christmas gift. The design is simple, bold, and easy to read, which is especially important for street-facing signage. While some councils may not want Christmas-themed flags displayed throughout the entire summer, a fresh festive Kiwiana-inspired design is currently in development.
